Makkovik in March & April..... Makkovik is a coastal community northeast of Happy Valley. Travel is by air and by boat in summer. Winter travel is by snowmobile. The community is situated on a sheltered bay in a saddle between two hills. Check the Photo diary for a panorama of the Makkovik harbor. The people are gracious and caring. Life in the winter months is all about staying warm inside and out, and having the right equipment to get the various jobs done; i.e. collecting wood, keeping ice off the roof, making sure one's doorways aren't shut in by drifting snow - meaning shoveling several times a day.
The church and surrounding Moravian land is at one end of town overlooking the harbor. People here are quite talented; knitting, boot-making, sewing, carving, hunting, sporting to name a few. The church, school and community center support the towns' activities year round. Groups of friends and family take off on hunting trips up north for caribou quite regularly. The heards are as large as 10,000. Other hunts include seal, martens, fox.
Community choir begins this week (Thurs) with the hopes of beginning a new handchime group as well. I've been recruiting local musicians for worship music including a cello, guitars, and violins. The jamming sessions have been alot of fun in preparing for worship.
I'll share more as the groups develop. Childrens' Sunday School went beautifully. The kids loved playing the handchimes and the parents will love seeing them in worship. Love, glenna
